by email. And the team calendars aren't visible at this time! How are people supposed to know when these teams meet, especially since the times get changed at the last minute?

I can see the calendar fine, and I just checked on two other computers - both work fine. Did you change the computer you check the site on? The calendar requires Adobe Flash Player to view.

Even if I didn't have Flash, I should still be getting email notices about the meetings from the chairs.

True, true. Can't help with that one.

The city can't possibly claim it's inviting citizen participation if the average computer user can't see the team calendars, get email notifications about team meetings, or attend meetings held during work day hours!

Lana,
Check your e-mail notification settings. In the upper right hand corner of your profile, under the "Inbox," choose "Settings," then click the "Email" tab on the left side of the page. Also, is the calendar completely absent from the action team pages that you're viewing?

I think the issue is that the chairs are not sending email reminders.

As far as the calendar - it works fine. If you have seen it before, you must have changed some settings on your computer or browser. Adobe Flash has a 97% adoption rate among Internet users, higher than any single browser for that matter. The average computer user most definitly has Flash, and would be able to see the calendar.

mmy, I'm getting lots of email notices from you guys, but not meeting time notices. That problem is compounded by the fact that I can no longer see the calendars, and the times or locations have frequently been changed at the last minute. We were told that there would soon be a calendar everyone in the community can see, and without having to upgrade their Flash program!

If you are running older than Flash Player 8, you should upgrade anyway or you probably cannot see thousands of other sites. You won't be able to see anything made with ActionScript 3, which is pretty much everything since 2007. Flash Player 10 is free, there is no reason not to upgrade:

Forcing everyone to download Flash 10 is a particularly bad way to force them to look at advertising. It also weeds out a lot of people, who see it as a security risk that makes them vulnerable to hackers. Many of us disapprove of that kind of tool being placed on our computers, opening us up to viruses.
There are so many other ways to use html that have been around for many years, that your users already have, and that don't put your users at risk.
Limiting access to Chattanooga Green in this way is a disappointing replacement for email notifications and open access to the online calendar -- to say the least.
Citizens were assured they'd get email notifications when they signed up. And citizen participation is hindered greatly by the ongoing lack of communications and access here.

I don't know where you get this stuff, but everything you just said is 100% false.

First, it has nothing to do with advertising here. I'd be happy to put the calendar on a page of it's own if you would like. The Ads here do not use Flash either, it's displayed with Javascript.

Second, Flash has been around since 1996. It doesn't get much older than that on the Internet. I was wrong on my previous numbers on Flash Reader. It's actually 99% of web users that have Flash now. That's better than any other web technology, including Javascript (which with PHP/MySQL runs this site, same as Facebook). You are also so far behind with technology by referencing HTML that it's not even funny. There is no way to display a calendar with just HTML (which noone uses anymore anyway, it's xHTML now). You need at minimum some sort of database to store information, and a way to pull and display that information. The calendar widget here uses MySQL for the database, and Flash to actively display the content without you having to load a new page everytime. The calendar has been running now for many months, with zero complaints. I assume you have been using it until now also.

You are most definitely living in a dream world if you posted something on this active content site (Javascript) claiming that Flash is a "tool" that puts your computer at risk. In general, Flash content is THE SAFEST content on the internet due to the way it's files are loaded and displayed. Unless you actually enter some information into a Flash application, there is almost no way for anything to happen to your computer. Flash is THE BEST way to deliver active content (user selected option) on the net, period. It's just very complicated to program and people are lazy.

Now, Javascript on the other hand can do all sorts of things to your computer since it's a client side script - meaning it's actually programming code that executes on YOUR local machine when you click on it. We use it here, Facebook uses it, MySpace uses it, Twitter, etc. It's very easy to make really cool active sites and it's perfectly safe on normal sites. But, if you visit a suspect site - you can unknowingly run some very dangerous and malicious scripts by simply loading a page. Generally now, your browser will catch these things (assuming you have updated your browser) but Flash is much, much safer than other methods because all of the options you select are actually programmed into the Flash file and not new options executed on your machine. If you reduce the security settings on your computer, the first thing to get turned off is Javascript.

Claiming we are denying access by requiring people to have Flash is ridiculous. It's widely accepted, safe, and used all over the Internet now. I supposed you don't use any apps or games on Facebook like Farmville because guess how those work - FLASH!

Lastly, the lack of emails has nothing to do with this site. You just need to get with your Chairs on that. I get plenty of emails from the Chairs of my groups.
