Hello all,
With all the rain we’ve had this spring, now is a good time to discuss landscape-watering habits. In general, all mature plants and grasses need one to two inches of water per week with the exception being drought tolerant plants. Too many people with irrigation systems water their plants a little bit every day. This practice causes plants to develop shallow roots. Watering heavily 2-3 times a week, when it is not raining, will encourage the roots of plants to travel deeper and thus making them more capable of retrieving ground water where evaporation isn’t accelerated. If you have an irrigation system, you can install a rain sensor. This sensor will automatically shut your system off when it rains. This is both good for your plants and pockets. It is ideal to water in the morning. This allows extra water to evaporate, preventing any unnecessary molds and fungus to thrive.
