Hello all,
I frequently hear this comment, “I want to a plant garden but not in the front yard.” I have yet to hear a legitimate reason for this. Our yards, for a long time, have only been a place to decorate with ornamental plants to make our homes look good. Edible plants are attractive too, not to mention the fact that you could cut back on your food budget and save fuel by not driving to the store as often. There are many fruiting plants that you can substitute for ornamentals that can serve dual purposes. For example: blueberries, raspberries, figs, pawpaw, thornless blackberries, and strawberries. Also, instead of planting an ornamental tree, why not an apple tree, pear tree or some types of cherries and plums. Herb and vegetable beds should be placed in the sunniest and flattest spot in the yard, front or back. In the wintertime, sow a cover crop of buckwheat or clover so you don’t have to look at a bare spot in your yard. In the spring, turn this in to help build your soil. We have a lot of edibles in our yard that are gorgeous, such as the very hardy and prolific blueberry shurbs, which can be trained into a shrub or small tree. They produce more than a handful of blueberries a day for over a month in the spring, and have gorgeous red fall coloring. The pear, peach, brazil nut and cherry trees are ornamental and delicious. And there's nothing like picking b'fast, lunch, dinner, or a snack right out of your yard, knowing it's completely organic. Blackberry patches, while not attractive as a garden centerpiece, are fabulous as understory. And I can't get over how ornamental some of my vegetables are mixed in with my wildflower garden, such as okra, which has a hibiscus flower, and highly ornate leaves. Edible gardens, edible forests, are a pure joy!
