There is no better topic for Earth Day than recycling. Millions of tons of compostable waste goes to the landfill every year. We should all be composting our food scraps and yard debris because it is sooooooooo easy. Pick up 4 used shipping pallets; these are easy to get for free from many different places. Level out a small space in your yard; nail three of the pallets together leaving one pallet removable or hinged for a door to create later access. With enough space, it is ideal if you can build two compost bins because after filling the first bin you should stop adding to the pile and let it sit for a season before use. You can purchase an organic enzyme at some garden centers to speed up the process. The other bin can store dry cover material such as small dead twigs, leaves or straw. Start with a little dirt and cover material. Each time you add food scraps or grass clippings, put some cover material on top to cause a layering effect. Flip your compost every now and then if possible. Use the finished product in your garden to help add organic matter and build your topsoil.
