Climbers

Climbing vines are beautiful and exotic. The perennial vines are even better because each new year brings a thicker vine and more flowers. The great thing about climbing vines is the height value they bring to a garden. Some need the support of a trellis whereas other more lightweights need only to be pointed in the right direction and they will climb any wall. Here are a list of some favorites of mine, what they look like and how to care for them….

1. Native Crossvine: A Native vine that thrives across the Southeastern United States. Its flower has five petals fused into a tube. Crossvine resembles and is related to the Trumpet Creeper. This vine requires partial shade. It grows best in moist woods, floodplains, thickets, streambanks, fencerows and--given optimum moisture--is adaptable to the typical suburban backyard.

2. Native Carolina Jasmine: This fantastic vine has an abundance of trumpet-shaped fragrant yellow flowers. These nectar-rich blooms attract lots of butterflies and hummingbirds. Known for its cold hardiness, the Carolina Jasmine is considered winter hardy to 0° F (-18°C). It retains its dark green year-round foliage and is considered semi-evergreen in northern climate ranges. This eco-friendly vine is virtually pestfree + drought tolerant. A fast grower with twining habits of up to 10-20', this garden vine is versatile in that it will thrive on an arbors/trellises, fence covers, mailboxes or just wherever you fancy growing this type of vine.

3. Climbing Hydrangea: Planting can take place from spring until fall. Plant it next to a brick wall or aside a tall tree with an eastern or westward exposure. Climbing Hydrangea is not the fastest plant to establish and growth will be slow for several years after planting. Once established the growth will improve with each new year. This vine requires full sun to partial shade.
